24 May Billy Porter Goes Eco-Friendly Glam For the Peabody Awards
Billy Porter has been on fire during 2019’s Red Carpet Season! From turning heads at the 2019 Oscars wearing a custom Christian Siriano velvet tuxedo gown, to most recently at the Met Gala making a dramatic grand entrance as an Egyptian Sun God wearing The Blonds and carried in by 6 shirtless men. For the 78th annual Peabody Awards in New York City, the Pose actor went for the dramatic statement wearing a ruffled gown by Texas designer, Celestino Couture. The red-pink, cascading ruffled tulle dress was Celestino’s closing look at the Fashion X Austin this past February.
The collection was inspired by Japanese warrior women known as Onna-Bugeisha, CELESTINO used shapes commonly found in kimonos like elongated sleeves and flowing hemlines, coupled and blended into the classical silhouettes for which the Mexican-American design house has become known. Designer Sergio “Celestino” Guadarrama has made it a point to work with an ecologically-sound focus, making use of up-cycled materials to reduce waste while keeping production in the U.S. CELESTINO has also partnered with Beauty for Freedom and pledged 10% of all proceeds to be donated to charities with the intent of ending human trafficking.
It’s no coincidence that Porter selected his Red Carpet look from the Texan fashion house as their values also match his own. “I was ready to create the conversation,” Porter told The Associated Press after the Oscars. “We have to teach people how to treat us, we have to teach people how to love us, we have to teach people how to respect us, and the only way we do that is to respect ourselves.” As for breaking gender norms on the Red Carpet and in his work, Porter says “People are actually listening. I hope it opens up a dialogue of healing. I will always continue to do me. If there’s anything I’ve learned in the 49 years that I’ve lived on this planet, is that being authentic is the only version of the story that anybody should be.” And we love the red carpet darling all the more for it!
