09 Apr Vida goes Varsity: The Spring ’19 Collection Is Here!
San Antonio streetwear brand Vida is celebrating their fifth year anniversary with the launch of their new S/S 19 fashion capsule called “Alumni.” We caught up with Miguel Ramos, owner and creative director of Vida, who gave us an inside look into his five year journey as a streetwear brand as well as his is vision for creating a collection and a yearbook themed lookbook dedicated to his youth and the five schools he grew up in Brownsville, Texas.
SLTV: When did you first realize you wanted to start a business in fashion?
MR: Fashion was always important to me from a very young age. I would always argue with my mom when I was a kid about what she wanted me to wear and what I wanted to wear.” He also stated the idea of a fashion company came about while skating and creating memories with friends at some of his favorite schools growing up. “It was only a dream at the time, but once in college I decided to chase the childhood dream, and Vida was born!
SLTV: What was your vision for creating Vida Alumni and what does it mean to you?
MR: This collection has so much meaning to me. It’s our fifth year so I wanted it to be special, with a vision and inspiration that came from the schools I attended as a child.” All the colors represent a different time in my life and a different school I attended. I wanted to create a full experience, which is why my lookbook resembles a yearbook. I am really proud of who I am and where I’m from and I wanted to pay homage to those in the past that influenced me into chasing my dreams.
SLTV:How is working in fashion different today than from when you started?
MR: When I first started streetwear was just a small branch in the fashion industry that wasn’t taken very seriously. I remember telling people that streetwear was going to be a major influence in high end fashion because the culture was changing. In today’s fashion, streetwear is everywhere from Virgil Abloh becoming creative director at Louis Vuitton, to brands like Gucci and Prada tapping into the streetwear culture for ideas. It was kind of like a revolution, which is great because it just opens the market up more and more.
The fashion capsule “Alumni” is a unique collection of graphic t-shirts, pants, shorts and hats with bold hues of blues, yellows, green, orange and browns that tell a story of the Brownsville, TX schools Ramos attended as a child. Amongst these schools were Clearwater and Putegnant Elementary, Central & Stillman Middle School and Hannah Highschool. When asked, how do you want people to feel when wearing your clothes? Ramos stated, “Comfortable! I want people to feel when they wear Vida, they don’t have to sacrifice comfort for style. You can drip and be cozy at the same time.”
From cover-to-cover, the lookbook is a collective of collaged photos in reminiscent of the end of school year tradition we all know and love, the yearbook.
SLTV: What’s next for Vida?
MR: “Alumni” was a very long process but there’s definitely no time to relax. Now that it is finally out, Fashion Week is on my mind. I’m already working towards our Fall/Winter Collection. I feel like with Alumni I set the bar pretty high but in October it will be higher.”
SLTV: Where do you see Vida in the next 5 years?
MR: In the next 5 years we are preparing to expand the brand into different markets, I want to expand to Mexico and all of Latin America.” I also want to reach Europe and Asia basically go global. I also love accessories so I am working into releasing a sunglass and watch collection and a sneaker for sure. That is definitely one of my main goals is to design my own shoe. I would love to collaborate with Puma.
