THE CONFERENCE

One of a kind in Texas, and now in its seventh year, the San Antonio Cocktail Conference has been named “one of the best” by publications like Fodor’s Travel and called “the future of cocktails” by Paste Magazine. Each year this cocktail festival brings together top bartenders and cocktail enthusiasts for educational seminars, guided tastings and cocktail parties. Houston Street Charities presents the San Antonio Cocktail Conference to celebrate the craft cocktail and the experience that surrounds it, while engaging the community in supporting children’s charities. Once again the conference will donate 100 percent of its profits to benefit children. Past years’ beneficiaries include Children’s Shelter, ChildSafe, Clarity Child Guidance Center, HeartGift San Antonio, TEAMability and Transplants for Children.

Presenting the award winning Arte y Pasión at Carmens De La Calle Cafewith Tamara Adira Monica Moncivais Champion Chayito Guille Glez Flamenco Randy Cordero Alex Nicholas and Adam Tutor.

Arte y Pasión, led by dancer and artistic director, Tamara Adira, is a company known for pushing the boundaries of flamenco and Spanish dance. Each performance is a visually stunning theatrical event comprised of independent artists, each highly accomplished, who come together to form one of the most contemporary Spanish dance companies in the country. The mission of Arte y Pasión is to share and promote the authentic art of flamenco, while exploring evolution and specific subject matter.

This year, Arte y Pasión was selected as San Antonio Tricentennial Arts Partner for their yearlong project Siete Aguas. In 2016, Arte y Pasión was picked up by the Carver Community Cultural Center on their season and by Luminaria to perform Una Flor en el Cruce in November 2016. Arte y Pasión is also known for such productions as Tribus, Frutas del Eter, Nascent|Nation, Estrellas, A Glass of Wine, Algoritmos, Angel of Gravity, Ventanas, Dibujos, Generaciones, Arte y Pasión, and Flamencos.

Arte y Pasión has garnered the participation of artists from such places as Madrid, Sevilla, Marseilles, San Francisco and New Mexico. Members of Arte y Pasión have been awarded Artist Foundation of San Antonio Department for Original Choreography, Original Theatrical Production, Original Costume Design and Original Song Composition.
Arte y Pasión is honored to have shared the stage with such artists as the late great maestros of flamenco, Teo Morca and Timo Lozano. The company artistic direction has drawn from experience in experimental performance art through training with the late master of experimental art, John Cage.

Flamenco enjoys a history that goes back over 500 years. When the gypsies arrived in Andalucia from India around 1425, they brought with them many song and dance styles that have strong Indian connections. At this time Andalucía was still under Arab rule, and along with the Jews and the moors, the gypsies were soon to be persecuted by the Catholic monarchs and the inquisition.

The moors were forced to convert to Christianity, and failure to do so resulted in expulsion from Spain, the Jews suffered a similar fate, and the gypsies were subjected to some of the worst atrocities in an attempt to exterminate them as a race. Many laws were passed by various monarchs, which forbid them anything to do with their identity.

They were to stop wearing their style of dress, cease speaking in the Romani language, and to stop their wanderings and seek steady employment, which prohibited them obtaining money by the usual gypsy traits like horse dealing, trading at fairs, and sorcery.

These laws and restrictions resulted in bands of gypsies, moors, and Jews taking refuge in treacherous mountainous areas, which were too desolate for the authorities to pursue them.
These different cultures lived in relative harmony for many years, and the fusion of their music and dances are what we know today as flamenco. And, after centuries, in 2010, the art of flamenco was recognized by UNESCO as a legitimate art form.

We are donating a portion of our proceeds to the The Little Black Dress Society, Inc.
